Katy Morlas Shannon received her Bachelors in English and Masters in History from Louisiana State University. She has been a professional historian for over fifteen years and has dedicated her career to uncovering the stories of the enslaved on plantations lining Louisiana’s River Road.Her work includes crucial early research for Whitney Plantation, an exhibit at Laura Plantation entitled “From the Big House to the Quarters: Slavery on Laura Plantation,” and a searchable online database of over 400 individuals enslaved on Evergreen Plantation.

In addition to her work as a historian, Katy is certified in Early Childhood Education and is passionate about children’s literature and encouraging a lifelong love of learning. She is a compulsive reader, amateur gardener, and believer in everyday miracles. Katy resides in Mandeville, Louisiana, with her husband, three children, and seven large bookcases overflowing with the written word.

Katy’s first book The New Orleans Bee: Dispatches from the first year of Louisiana’s longest-running French-language newspaper is available via Kindle on Amazon.com. Her forthcoming work Antoine of Oak Alley releases with Pelican Publishing in 2021.
